Topkapı Palace

Topkapı Palace is a historic imperial complex in Istanbul that served as the Ottoman sultans’ principal residence and administrative center for nearly four centuries. It is now a museum overlooking the Golden Horn and the Bosporus.

First Courtyard: The largest outer court of Topkapı Palace, historically open to the public and used for ceremonies and services. Its broad grounds formed the palace’s public-facing entrance zone.
Conquest of Constantinople: The Ottoman capture of Constantinople in 1453 under Sultan Mehmed II, ending Byzantine imperial rule in the city. The conquest made a new Ottoman imperial residence in the city possible.
Ottoman Imperial Council: The central Ottoman governing body in which senior officials deliberated on military, administrative, and diplomatic matters. The palace housed the council’s meeting chamber and supporting offices.

Second Courtyard: A central court of Topkapı Palace containing major administrative and service buildings. The palace’s government offices and kitchens centered on this court.
Mehmed II: Ottoman sultan from 1444 to 1446 and 1451 to 1481, known for conquering Constantinople in 1453. He ordered the palace’s construction after establishing Ottoman rule in the city.
Ottoman court ceremony: Formal rituals that structured access to the Ottoman ruler and displayed the hierarchy of the imperial court. Palace gates and courtyards provided settings for ceremonies of rank and access.
Ottoman dynasty: The family that ruled the Ottoman Empire from its establishment until the abolition of the sultanate in 1922. The dynasty’s household and authority were centered at the palace for centuries.
Third Courtyard: The inner court of Topkapı Palace, entered through the Gate of Felicity and associated with the sultan’s household. It marked the transition from state administration to the sultan’s private domain.
Old Palace (Istanbul): The earlier Ottoman palace built in Istanbul after the conquest, before the court shifted to Topkapı Palace. Its predecessor status clarifies why Topkapı became the court’s principal residence.
