Topographic surveying

Topographic surveying measures and maps terrain elevations and the positions of natural and built features, producing a spatial representation of a site.

Total station: An electronic surveying instrument that measures horizontal and vertical angles and distances to determine point positions. It combines angle and distance observations to locate terrain points.
Geodesy: The science of measuring Earth’s shape, orientation, gravity field, and positions on its surface. Its reference frameworks underpin precise survey coordinates over large areas.
Civil engineering: The professional discipline concerned with designing and maintaining infrastructure and the built environment. Engineers use surveyed terrain to plan sites, roads, drainage, and utilities.
Photogrammetry: The extraction of measurements and spatial information from photographs. It can map terrain from overlapping images rather than point-by-point field observations.
Global Navigation Satellite System: A satellite-based system that provides positioning and timing information to receivers on Earth. Survey-grade GNSS receivers establish precise coordinates across open sites.
Coordinate system: A system that assigns numerical coordinates to locations relative to a defined origin and axes. A survey’s coordinates have meaning only within a specified system.
Site plan: A scaled drawing showing a proposed or existing development in relation to a parcel and its features. Topographic information supplies existing grades and features for site design.
LiDAR: A remote-sensing method that measures distance using pulses of laser light. Airborne LiDAR captures dense elevation data over broad areas as an alternative to conventional field surveys.
Leveling: A surveying process for determining elevation differences between points. It establishes or checks the vertical control that terrain elevations depend on.
Datum: A reference framework that defines the origin, orientation, and scale for spatial measurements. Horizontal and vertical datums determine how mapped positions and elevations relate to Earth.
