Total Factor Productivity

Total factor productivity (TFP) is the portion of output growth not explained by measured growth in labor and capital inputs. It captures effects such as technology, efficiency, and measurement error.

Growth Accounting: A method that decomposes output growth into contributions from inputs and productivity. It calculates TFP as the residual after labor and capital contributions are subtracted.
Robert Solow: An American economist whose research on economic growth introduced a prominent productivity residual. His 1957 growth-accounting study made the residual a central measure of technical change.
Productivity Measurement: The quantitative assessment of output produced relative to inputs used. TFP is a broad productivity measure when labor and capital are considered together.
Measurement Error: The difference between a measured quantity and its true value. Errors in output or input data can appear as changes in TFP.
Cobb–Douglas Production Function: A production function in which output depends on labor and capital raised to constant exponents. Its exponents often represent the input weights used to estimate TFP growth.
Technical Change: Changes in production methods or knowledge that alter how inputs produce output. Early TFP analysis treated the residual chiefly as a measure of technical change.
International Productivity Comparison: The comparison of productivity levels or growth rates across countries. TFP estimates are used to compare how effectively economies turn inputs into output.
Intangible Capital: Nonphysical assets such as software, research, and organizational knowledge that contribute to production. Uncounted intangible investment can make measured TFP growth look larger than it is.
Labor Productivity: Output per unit of labor input, often measured per worker or per hour worked. It can rise through capital deepening even when TFP does not.
Economic Growth: A sustained increase in an economy’s production of goods and services. TFP became a way to separate productivity gains from growth in measured inputs.
