Touch

Touch is the perception of contact, pressure, vibration, and deformation at the body’s surface. It arises from specialized sensory receptors and their processing by the nervous system.

Mechanoreceptor: A sensory receptor that responds to mechanical forces such as pressure, stretch, or vibration. Mechanoreceptors convert skin deformation into signals that initiate tactile sensations.
Tactile acuity: The ability to distinguish fine spatial details through touch. It measures how precisely touch can localize nearby points or surface features.
Haptic technology: Technology that creates or measures touch-like sensations through mechanical, electrical, or other stimulation. It recreates tactile cues for interfaces, simulations, and remote interaction.
Astereognosis: The inability to identify familiar objects by touch despite adequate basic sensation. It shows that touch depends on cortical integration, not sensation alone.
Temperature sensation: The perception of warmth and cold through temperature-sensitive sensory pathways. Temperature is often felt alongside touch but uses partly distinct receptors and pathways.
Merkel cell: A touch-sensitive cell in the skin associated with slowly adapting sensory nerve endings. Merkel cell complexes encode sustained pressure and fine spatial detail.
Two-point discrimination: A psychophysical test of whether two nearby touches are perceived as separate. The test illustrates how receptor density and neural processing shape tactile resolution.
Haptic perception: The perception of objects and their properties through active touch and movement. It explains how exploration turns contact into knowledge of object shape and material.
Tactile agnosia: A disorder in which objects cannot be recognized by touch despite intact elementary tactile sensation. It separates detecting contact from interpreting what the hand is touching.
Pain: An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. Pain can arise from contact but is not equivalent to tactile sensation.
