Touchscreen

A touchscreen is an electronic display that detects touch and uses its location to control software directly, without requiring a separate pointing device.

Resistive touchscreen: A touchscreen that detects pressure when two conductive layers make contact. Its pressure-sensitive layers explain how a basic touchscreen can register a finger or stylus.
Touch sensor: A component that detects contact or proximity and converts it into an electrical signal. It supplies the touchscreen's measurements of where contact occurs.
E. A. Johnson: A British engineer whose early capacitive touchscreen work was published in 1965 and 1967. His touch display for air-traffic control is among the earliest documented capacitive designs.
Smartphone: A mobile phone with advanced computing functions and an operating system that runs applications. Its touchscreen supports direct control in a compact device without a built-in keyboard.
Trackpad: A touch-sensitive surface that controls a pointer on a separate display. Unlike a touchscreen, it separates the input surface from the visual output.
Capacitive touchscreen: A touchscreen that detects changes in an electrical field caused by a conductive object. Most modern phones use this approach to sense fingers and multiple simultaneous touches.
Display device: An electronic device that presents visual information as images, text, or video. A touchscreen combines visual output with touch input on a shared surface.
PLATO IV: A 1972 computer-based education terminal with a plasma display and an infrared touch panel. It demonstrated touch input in an operational interactive computer system.
Tablet computer: A portable computer built around a flat display, commonly operated by touch. Its larger touchscreen supports direct manipulation of documents, media, and apps.
Computer mouse: A handheld pointing device that moves a cursor across a computer display. A mouse offers precise indirect pointing rather than direct contact with screen controls.
