Toungoo dynasty

A Burmese royal dynasty that ruled from 1510 to 1752 and built the largest empire in mainland Southeast Asian history.

Taungoo: A Burmese town and principality that became the Toungoo dynasty’s original power base. The dynasty took its name and early strength from this principality.
Bayinnaung: The Toungoo king who conquered an extensive mainland Southeast Asian empire from 1550 to 1581. His campaigns brought the dynasty to its greatest territorial extent.
Nanda Bayin: A Toungoo king who ruled from 1581 to 1599 and struggled to hold his father’s empire together. His reign exposed the limits of the empire Bayinnaung had assembled.

Restored Toungoo dynasty: The Burmese royal regime that reunified the country after the first Toungoo Empire fragmented. Its more compact kingdom differed sharply from Bayinnaung’s sprawling empire.
Mingyi Nyo: The ruler who made Toungoo independent and founded the dynasty’s royal line in 1510. His independence marked the dynasty’s formal beginning.
Hanthawaddy Kingdom: A Mon kingdom in Lower Burma centered on Pegu, prominent from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. Its conquest supplied the dynasty with a wealthy southern core.
