Tourist : A person who travels outside their usual environment for a limited period and a purpose other than taking up local employment. Tourists are the visitors whose trips and spending make tourism measurable.
Cultural tourism : Travel motivated by experiencing the culture, heritage, arts, or way of life of a place. Visitors seek cultural sites and practices as central parts of a trip.
Tourism economics : The study of tourism’s effects on prices, employment, income, investment, and economic development. Visitor spending creates income while also producing costs and leakages.
Business travel : Travel undertaken primarily for work-related activities, such as meetings, sales, or training. It is a common tourism purpose, but business travel is often tracked separately from leisure.
Grand Tour : An extended educational journey through Europe undertaken by young aristocrats, especially from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. It was an elite predecessor to later forms of educational and cultural travel.
Tourism industry : Businesses and organizations that provide transport, accommodation, attractions, and other services to visitors. Its providers turn travel demand into bookable services and local jobs.
Ecotourism : Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and supports local communities. It links nature-based trips to conservation and community benefits.
Overtourism : A condition in which tourism significantly harms residents’ quality of life or visitors’ experience. Concentrated visitor pressure can strain housing, infrastructure, and public space.
Migration : A change of usual residence, temporarily or permanently, across a place boundary. Tourism involves temporary visits rather than a change in usual residence.
Thomas Cook : An English travel organizer who began arranging excursions in the nineteenth century and built a travel business. His organized excursions helped establish commercial package travel.
