Tournament

A competition organized as a sequence of matches in which participants advance or are eliminated until a winner is determined.

Single-elimination tournament: A tournament format in which each loss eliminates a participant. Its bracket sends every defeated participant out of contention.
FIFA World Cup: An international association football competition contested by men's national teams under FIFA. Its finals combine group play with a knockout stage.
League system: A competition structure in which teams accumulate results across a season, typically playing many opponents. A league ranks teams over time instead of eliminating them through a bracket.
Competitive balance: The degree to which competitors in a contest have comparable chances of success. Format choices can magnify small differences or preserve chances after a loss.
Double-elimination tournament: A tournament format in which a participant is eliminated after losing twice. A second bracket gives participants one loss before elimination.

NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament: The annual United States national championship tournament for NCAA Division I men's college basketball. Its single-elimination bracket makes each match a potential final appearance.
