Toxicodendron vernicifluum

Toxicodendron vernicifluum is an East Asian tree whose sap hardens into urushi, a durable lacquer used to coat objects and artworks.

Urushi: Urushi is a natural lacquer made from the sap of Toxicodendron vernicifluum. This is the tree’s processed sap and the material for which it is cultivated.
Oxidative polymerization: Oxidative polymerization joins small molecules into larger structures through reactions involving oxygen. Urushiol molecules form a durable network as they oxidize and polymerize.
