Toy safety

Toy safety is the design, testing, and regulation of toys to reduce risks such as choking, injury, and exposure to hazardous materials.

Hazard analysis: A systematic process for identifying hazards, estimating risks, and selecting controls. Toy makers use it to find foreseeable dangers before products reach children.
ASTM F963: A United States standard specifying safety requirements and test methods for toys. It establishes many of the tests used to evaluate toys sold in the United States.
Consumer Product Safety Commission: An independent United States agency that oversees consumer-product safety and enforces relevant laws. The agency sets or enforces requirements and can order recalls of hazardous toys.
Nanomaterials: Materials containing structures with dimensions typically measured on the nanometer scale. Their behavior and exposure pathways can be difficult to assess in toys.
Small-parts cylinder: A test fixture used to determine whether an object is small enough to present a choking hazard to young children. It provides a standardized way to assess whether toy parts pose a choking risk.
EN 71: A European series of standards addressing the safety of toys. Its requirements support conformity assessment for toys marketed in the European Union.
Lead poisoning: Illness caused by exposure to lead, a toxic metal that can damage multiple body systems. Lead in toy paint or materials can expose children through hand-to-mouth behavior.
Online marketplace: A digital platform where multiple sellers offer goods to consumers. Cross-border listings and changing sellers can complicate toy-safety oversight.
Age grading: The assignment of products to age groups based on intended use, abilities, and developmental risks. Age recommendations shape which hazards and tests apply to a toy.
Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act: A United States law enacted in 2008 that strengthened consumer-product safety requirements and oversight. It imposed requirements affecting lead, phthalates, testing, and certification of children’s products.
