Toyama Prefecture

A prefecture in central Japan on the Sea of Japan, known for the Tateyama mountain range, Toyama Bay, and the city of Toyama.

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route: A mountain sightseeing route crossing the Northern Japanese Alps through Toyama and Nagano prefectures. It crosses the Tateyama range and links several of Toyama’s best-known highland sites.
Kurobe River: A steep, fast-flowing river in Toyama Prefecture that descends from the Northern Japanese Alps to Toyama Bay. Its narrow gorge and steep drop have enabled major hydroelectric projects.
Etchū Province: A former province of Japan whose territory largely corresponds to present-day Toyama Prefecture. Its boundaries provide the historical predecessor to the modern prefecture.
Toyama Bay sushi: Sushi made with seafood caught in Toyama Bay, including seasonal white shrimp and firefly squid. It showcases the prefecture’s seafood through ingredients tied to its nearby waters.
Hokuriku region: A region on the Sea of Japan coast of central Honshu, commonly including Toyama, Ishikawa, and Fukui prefectures. Toyama is one of the region’s principal prefectures.
Kurobe Dam: A large arch dam on the Kurobe River in Toyama Prefecture, completed in 1963. The dam is a landmark of the prefecture’s mountain engineering and hydroelectric development.
Snowbelt: A region with substantial seasonal snowfall, often on the side of a mountain range exposed to moist winds. Winter monsoon air crossing the Sea of Japan brings heavy snow to Toyama.
Kaga Domain: A powerful feudal domain ruled by the Maeda clan during Japan’s Edo period. The western part of present-day Toyama was governed within Kaga’s territories.
Shiroebi: A small translucent shrimp harvested in Toyama Bay and valued in Japanese cuisine. Its limited habitat and local fishery make it a signature Toyama ingredient.
Ishikawa Prefecture: A prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast of central Honshu, west of Toyama Prefecture. The neighboring prefecture shares the Hokuriku regional identity and coastal setting.
