Toyota War

The 1986–1987 phase of the Chad–Libya conflict in which Chadian forces used fast-moving Toyota pickups to defeat Libyan forces.

Technical: A light infantry vehicle mounting a machine gun or recoilless rifle, often on a pickup truck. Chadian forces adapted Toyota pickups into mobile weapon platforms.
Chad–Libya conflict: A prolonged armed conflict between Chad and Libya over territory and influence, especially the Aouzou Strip. The Toyota War was its decisive late phase.
Idriss Déby: Chadian military officer who later became president and served as a commander during the conflict with Libya. He was among the Chadian commanders associated with the counteroffensive.
Battle of Fada: A March 1987 battle in which Chadian forces defeated a Libyan garrison at Fada. Its outcome demonstrated the effectiveness of the Chadian mobile assault.
International Court of Justice: The principal judicial organ of the United Nations, which settles legal disputes between states. In 1994 it ruled that the Aouzou Strip belonged to Chad.
Toyota Hilux: A pickup truck produced by Toyota and known for durability across varied terrain. Hilux pickups supplied much of the campaign’s distinctive mobility.
Aouzou Strip: A narrow strip of territory in northern Chad claimed and occupied by Libya for decades. The territorial dispute helped drive the wider war.
François Tombalbaye: Chad’s first president, whose rule ended in a 1975 coup and whose era preceded the civil wars. The political fractures of his rule formed part of the conflict’s background.
Battle of Ouadi Doum: A March 1987 battle in which Chadian forces captured Libya’s major airbase in northern Chad. The loss of this fortified base dealt Libya a major operational setback.
Libyan withdrawal from Chad: The 1994 removal of Libyan forces from the Aouzou Strip after an International Court of Justice ruling. It completed the territorial outcome set in motion by Libya’s military defeat.
