Trace italienne

Trace italienne is a low, angular fortification system developed in early modern Europe to withstand cannon fire. Its projecting bastions let defenders cover the walls and surrounding ground with overlapping artillery fire.

Bastion: A projecting fortification work that lets defenders fire along adjacent walls and across approaches. Its outward angle gave defenders flanking fire along the curtain walls.
Gunpowder artillery: Weapons that propel projectiles using the expanding gases of burning gunpowder. Its growing power made medieval high-walled castles vulnerable and prompted new designs.
Curtain wall: The section of defensive wall connecting two towers or bastions. Its length and protection shaped the spacing and geometry of the bastions.
