Tracheal system

A network of air-filled tubes that delivers oxygen directly to tissues and carries carbon dioxide away in insects and some other arthropods.

Spiracle: An external opening through which air enters or leaves an arthropod’s tracheal system. These openings regulate airflow at the body surface and lead into the tracheae.
Gas exchange: The transfer of oxygen and carbon dioxide between an organism and its environment or tissues. The tracheal system is one anatomical solution for delivering gases to cells.
Insect flight: Powered aerial movement in insects, produced by the coordinated action of wings and flight muscles. Flight raises oxygen demand, prompting specialized ventilation and tracheal adaptations.
Insect body size: The range and scaling of body dimensions found among insects. Diffusion distances and tube geometry constrain how oxygen reaches tissues as bodies grow.
Trachea (insect anatomy): A larger air-conducting tube in an insect, lined with cuticle and connected to spiracles. Tracheae carry air inward and branch into narrower tubes.
Oxygen: A chemical element whose molecular form is required for aerobic cellular respiration. The network supplies oxygen from the external environment to metabolizing tissues.
Aquatic insect: An insect whose immature or adult stages live in water. Some aquatic insects obtain oxygen through gills, air stores, or connections to atmospheric air.
Oxygen limitation: A condition in which oxygen supply fails to meet an organism’s physiological demand. The tracheal system’s capacity can limit performance during intense activity or low-oxygen exposure.
Tracheole: A fine terminal branch of an insect tracheal system that brings air close to individual cells. Gas exchange with tissues occurs across the thin ends of the branching network.
Carbon dioxide: A colorless gas produced by cellular respiration and used by plants in photosynthesis. The tracheal network provides a route for carbon dioxide to leave tissues.
