Caravan : A group of people and pack animals traveling together, especially across difficult terrain. Caravans carried goods and travelers along overland routes where roads or security were limited.
Silk Road : A network of Eurasian trade routes linking East Asia with Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. It is the best-known example of an intercontinental overland trade network.
Domestication of the horse : The process by which humans bred and adapted horses for riding, work, and transport. Horse transport increased the reach and speed of many Eurasian overland routes.
Cultural diffusion : The spread of cultural practices, ideas, and technologies between societies through contact. Merchants and travelers transmitted languages, technologies, and customs between route-connected communities.
Trade network : A system of connected people, places, and exchanges through which goods or services move. A network includes multiple routes and trading centers rather than a single path.
Port : A coastal or river location where ships load and unload cargo and passengers. Ports link sea routes to inland markets and other transport networks.
Indian Ocean trade : A maritime trading system linking communities around the Indian Ocean across many centuries. Seasonal winds made this sea network a dependable route between distant ports.
Monsoon : A seasonal reversal of prevailing winds that brings distinct wet and dry periods. Predictable monsoon winds enabled recurring voyages across the Indian Ocean.
Black Death : The devastating pandemic that killed millions across Eurasia and North Africa in the fourteenth century. The movement of people and goods along Eurasian networks helped the plague spread.
Supply chain : The sequence of activities and organizations involved in producing and delivering a product. A supply chain organizes production and delivery; a trade route is only one possible pathway within it.
