Trades Union Congress

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is a national federation of trade unions in the United Kingdom, founded in 1868 to represent and coordinate the trade union movement.

Manchester Trades Union Congress: The first meeting of the Trades Union Congress, held in Manchester in 1868. This inaugural gathering established the annual congress that became the TUC.
TUC Congress: The annual conference at which TUC affiliates debate policy and pass motions. It is the federation's principal forum for setting shared priorities.
Trade union recognition: Formal acceptance by an employer that a union may represent workers, often for collective bargaining. The TUC campaigns for legal and practical routes to union recognition.
Independent unions: Trade unions that are not affiliated to a larger union federation or political organization. The TUC coordinates affiliates but does not absorb them into a single union.
William Allan: A British trade union leader who helped establish the Trades Union Congress. As secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, he helped organize the first congress.
TUC General Council: The elected governing body responsible for carrying out TUC policy between congresses. It coordinates the federation's work between annual meetings.
National Minimum Wage Act 1998: The UK law that established a statutory minimum wage, introduced in 1999. The TUC campaigned for a national minimum wage before its introduction.
Confederation of British Industry: A UK business organization that represents employers and companies in policy discussions. It often represents business interests opposite those advanced by the TUC.
George Potter: A British trade unionist and newspaper editor active in the mid-nineteenth century. His London Working Men's Association helped convene the 1868 congress.
TUC General Secretary: The chief executive and public representative of the Trades Union Congress. The office leads the TUC's staff and presents its positions publicly.
