Trafalgar Square

A public square in central London, named for Britain’s 1805 victory at the Battle of Trafalgar and known for Nelson’s Column.

Battle of Trafalgar: An 1805 naval battle in which the British fleet defeated the French and Spanish fleets off Cape Trafalgar. The square commemorates this British naval victory.
Nelson’s Column: A monument in Trafalgar Square topped by a statue of Admiral Horatio Nelson. It is the square’s central monument, commemorating Nelson’s role at Trafalgar.
New Year's Eve: The evening before the start of a new calendar year, often marked by public celebrations. Trafalgar Square has hosted public New Year celebrations and countdown events.
Piccadilly Circus: A road junction and public space in London’s West End, known for illuminated advertising and the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain. Unlike Trafalgar Square’s monumental civic design, it is chiefly a commercial junction.

Edwin Landseer: A British painter and sculptor known for his depictions of animals, especially lions. Landseer designed the bronze lions at the base of Nelson’s Column.
London Pride: An annual LGBTQ+ festival and parade held in London. Pride events have used the square as a gathering and celebration site.
Leicester Square: A pedestrianized public square in London’s West End, surrounded by cinemas, theatres, and restaurants. It serves entertainment and leisure functions more than Trafalgar Square’s civic and commemorative ones.
Charles Barry: An English architect best known for designing the Palace of Westminster after its destruction by fire. Barry designed the square’s layout and much of its architectural setting.
Trafalgar Square fountains: Two fountains in Trafalgar Square, installed in the nineteenth century and later redesigned. They balance the central column and shape the open space around it.
