A dramatic genre that portrays serious suffering and loss, often through the downfall of a central character. Its conflicts expose the costs of human choices, social forces, or fate.

Hamartia: An error or failing that contributes to a tragic protagonist’s downfall. It names the error often associated with the protagonist’s turn toward disaster.
