Tragicomedy

Tragicomedy is a dramatic form that combines comic and tragic elements, often without resolving into either a purely comic or purely tragic ending.

Tragedy: A dramatic form centered on grave conflict and suffering, often ending in catastrophe. Its serious conflicts supply tragicomedy with stakes that comedy alone would not provide.
Plato: An ancient Greek philosopher whose dialogues shaped Western philosophy. His use of tragic and comic elements in dialogue offers an early precedent for mixed dramatic modes.
Amphitryon: A Roman comedy by Plautus in which Jupiter impersonates the general Amphitryon. Its divine subject and comic ending became an ancient precedent for the label tragicomedy.
Problem play: A Shakespearean play whose genre and moral resolution resist clear classification. The label often describes plays whose tonal uncertainty overlaps with tragicomedy.
Comedy: A dramatic form that uses humor and often resolves conflict in reconciliation or social restoration. Its humor and reconciliations provide one half of tragicomedy’s tonal mixture.
Aristotle: An ancient Greek philosopher whose Poetics analyzes tragedy, epic, and dramatic representation. His account of tragedy became a key standard against which later mixed forms were defined.
The Winter's Tale: A Shakespeare play in which a king’s jealousy causes loss before a late reunion. Its tragic consequences and improbable restoration exemplify Shakespearean tragicomedy.
Dark comedy: A comic form that finds humor in subjects usually treated as serious or disturbing. It keeps comedy dominant, whereas tragicomedy gives tragic conflict independent weight.
Dramatic irony: A situation in which an audience knows something important that a character does not. It can make the same dramatic event comic to an audience and dangerous to a character.
Plautus: A Roman comic playwright whose surviving works include Amphitryon. Amphitryon is an early play later described as tragicomic because it mixes divine and comic action.
