Trans-European Transport Network

The Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) is the European Union’s policy framework for developing interconnected transport infrastructure across Europe, including roads, railways, waterways, ports, and airports.

TEN-T Core Network: The strategically important part of TEN-T, intended to connect major urban nodes, ports, airports, and border crossings. It forms the network’s priority backbone for completing major cross-border connections.
Multimodal transport: The movement of people or goods using multiple modes of transport within a journey or logistics chain. TEN-T links modes so journeys and freight can cross between them.
Treaty of Maastricht: The 1992 treaty that established the European Union and introduced a specific EU policy basis for trans-European networks. It gave the EU a treaty foundation for developing trans-European infrastructure networks.
European Single Market: The EU framework enabling the free movement of goods, services, capital, and people among member states. Cross-border transport links help goods and people move within the single market.
National transport network: Transport infrastructure planned and managed primarily within the jurisdiction of an individual country. TEN-T coordinates across borders, while national networks remain under national responsibility.
TEN-T Comprehensive Network: The wider TEN-T network that connects regions and local infrastructure to the core network. It extends the core network’s reach to more cities and transport links.
Interoperability: The ability of systems or components to operate together across technical or organizational boundaries. Common technical requirements help infrastructure work across national borders.
European Commission: The executive institution of the European Union, responsible for proposing legislation and overseeing its implementation. It proposes TEN-T policy and coordinates its implementation with member states.
Rail transport in Europe: The network of passenger and freight railway services operating across European countries. TEN-T investment can improve cross-border rail capacity and connectivity.
European Regional Development Fund: An EU fund supporting regional development and reducing economic disparities among European regions. It can fund transport projects for regional development rather than TEN-T’s network-wide priorities.
