Transboundary river

A river whose course or drainage basin crosses the borders of two or more countries. Its shared waters create links between national water management, ecosystems, and diplomacy.

International water law: The legal rules governing freshwater resources shared across national borders. It supplies principles for states sharing a river, including equitable use and avoiding significant harm.
Nile: A major African river system flowing north through northeastern Africa to the Mediterranean Sea. Its basin links upstream development and downstream water dependence among many states.
Drainage divide: A ridge or boundary separating areas that drain into different river systems. A political border crossing a drainage divide can split a basin's management area.
Water conflict: Disputes or violence arising from competition over water access, control, or use. Unequal dependence and unilateral projects can intensify tensions among basin states.
Water allocation: The distribution of water among users, places, or purposes. Upstream withdrawals and downstream needs make allocation central to shared rivers.
Mekong: A major Southeast Asian river flowing from the Tibetan Plateau through mainland Southeast Asia. Dams and changing flows connect hydropower decisions to fisheries and livelihoods downstream.
Riparian state: A state that borders or contains part of a river, lake, or other watercourse. The term identifies countries with interests in the same transboundary river.
Hydropolitics: The study and practice of political relations shaped by water resources. River flows create strategic leverage as well as incentives for cooperation.
River basin: The land area drained by a river and its tributaries. The basin, not just the channel, defines many cross-border water connections.
Danube: A European river that flows through or borders ten countries before reaching the Black Sea. Its many riparian states have built extensive institutions for navigation and water management.
