Transdanubia

Transdanubia is the western and southwestern region of Hungary, lying west of the Danube River. Its landscapes include Lake Balaton, the Little Hungarian Plain, and the Mecsek Mountains.

Danube: The Danube is Europe’s second-longest river, flowing through ten countries before reaching the Black Sea. The river gives Transdanubia its name and marks its eastern boundary.
Lake Balaton: Lake Balaton is a large freshwater lake in western Hungary and Central Europe’s largest lake. Its shoreline is a defining landmark of central Transdanubia.
Kingdom of Hungary: The Kingdom of Hungary was a Central European state that existed in various forms from the Middle Ages to 1918. Transdanubia formed part of the kingdom’s western lands.
Transdanubian wine regions: Transdanubian wine regions are Hungarian wine-growing areas west and south of the Danube. Their vineyards connect the region’s climate and landscapes to agriculture.
Hungary: Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe, with Budapest as its capital. Transdanubia is one of Hungary’s major regions.
Little Hungarian Plain: The Little Hungarian Plain is a lowland extending across northwestern Hungary and neighboring countries. It occupies much of Transdanubia’s northwestern landscape.
Roman Pannonia: Pannonia was a Roman province covering parts of present-day Hungary and neighboring countries. Roman rule shaped settlements and routes across western Hungary.
Balaton tourism: Balaton tourism is the travel and recreation economy centered on Hungary’s Lake Balaton. Summer recreation makes the lake a major destination within Transdanubia.
Western Transdanubia: Western Transdanubia is a region of Hungary adjoining Austria, Slovakia, and Slovenia. It is the country’s northwestern subdivision of Transdanubia.
Bakony: The Bakony is a forested mountain range north of Lake Balaton in western Hungary. Its hills separate the lake basin from the Little Hungarian Plain.
