Transference

Transference is the redirection of feelings, expectations, and relational patterns associated with earlier relationships onto another person, especially a therapist.

Unconscious: Mental processes and contents that are not available to conscious awareness. Transference is often understood as an unconscious pattern shaping feelings toward another person.
Sigmund Freud: An Austrian neurologist who founded psychoanalysis and developed influential theories of the unconscious. Freud made transference a central concept in explaining therapeutic relationships.
Projection (psychology): A defense mechanism in which a person attributes disowned feelings or impulses to someone else. Projection assigns one’s own feelings outward; transference redirects feelings rooted in earlier relationships.
Transference interpretation: A therapeutic intervention that identifies and explores feelings or expectations directed toward the therapist. It makes the patient’s relationship pattern in the present therapy an explicit subject of discussion.
Attachment theory: A framework explaining how early bonds influence expectations and behavior in later relationships. Attachment patterns can inform the expectations transferred into a therapeutic relationship.
Josef Breuer: An Austrian physician whose work with Anna O. helped shape the early practice of psychoanalysis. Breuer’s treatment contributed to Freud’s early observations of feelings directed toward a physician.
Resistance (psychoanalysis): A person’s conscious or unconscious opposition to becoming aware of distressing thoughts or feelings. Resistance obstructs therapeutic work, while transference describes feelings directed toward the therapist.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy: A form of psychotherapy that explores unconscious processes, emotional conflict, and recurring relationship patterns. Many psychodynamic approaches use transference to examine recurring patterns in relationships.
Object relations theory: A psychoanalytic approach that explains personality through internalized relationships with significant others. It describes how internalized relationship patterns can be repeated with a therapist.
Anna O.: The pseudonym of Bertha Pappenheim, a patient treated by Josef Breuer in a case foundational to psychoanalysis. Her treatment is part of the early clinical history from which psychoanalytic ideas of transference emerged.
