Transgender history

Transgender history studies people and experiences that challenged or exceeded the gender norms of their times, including identities and practices not captured by modern terminology.

Public Universal Friend: An eighteenth-century American preacher who rejected gendered pronouns and the name assigned at birth. Their religious community and public life reveal gender nonconformity in the early United States.
Third gender: A social category for genders recognized as neither exclusively man nor woman. It offers a comparative frame while preserving distinctions among particular societies.
Karl M. Baer: A German social worker and writer whose 1907 autobiography described his life as a transgender man. His account is an early first-person record of medical transition and social recognition.
Cisnormativity: The assumption that being cisgender is the normal or default human condition. It helps explain why historical records often made gender variance invisible or exceptional.

Historical anachronism: The projection of concepts or categories from one era onto another in ways that distort the past. Applying today's identity labels to earlier people requires evidence and careful qualification.
