Transgender rights

Transgender rights are legal and social protections that enable transgender people to live with equality, safety, autonomy, and full participation in society.

Gender recognition: Legal or administrative recognition of a person's gender, including identity documents and official records. Recognition rules determine whether transgender people can have names and gender markers that match their identities.
Gender identity: A person's internal sense of their own gender, which may or may not align with sex assigned at birth. Many protections address discrimination based on gender identity rather than anatomy or assigned sex.
Stonewall riots: A series of protests against a police raid at New York City's Stonewall Inn in June 1969. The uprising became a landmark in LGBTQ activism that later included transgender-rights organizing.
Gender-critical feminism: A feminist perspective that rejects or questions defining sex-based categories through gender identity. Its claims frequently conflict with transgender-rights arguments about recognition and inclusion.
Gender-affirming care: Healthcare that supports a person's gender identity, including social, psychological, and medical care. Access to appropriate care is a central equality and bodily-autonomy issue.
Sex discrimination: Unfavorable treatment because of a person's sex, including traits or stereotypes associated with sex. Legal systems often assess transgender discrimination through rules against sex discrimination.
Compton's Cafeteria riot: A 1966 resistance to police harassment by transgender people and other queer patrons in San Francisco. It documents transgender-led resistance to violence and exclusion before Stonewall.
Bathroom bills: Laws or policies regulating access to public restrooms according to sex classifications. These measures directly contest transgender people's access to facilities consistent with their gender.
Employment discrimination: Unfavorable treatment in hiring or work because of a protected characteristic or perceived trait. Workplace protections shape transgender people's access to jobs, fair treatment, and economic security.
Equality before the law: The principle that people are subject to the same laws and entitled to equal legal protection. It supplies a broad legal basis for challenging unequal treatment of transgender people.
