Transhumanism

Transhumanism is a philosophical and cultural movement advocating science and technology to expand human capabilities and overcome limitations such as aging and disease.

Human enhancement: The use of interventions to improve human abilities or traits beyond restoring health or typical functioning. Transhumanism treats enhancement as a route to capabilities beyond ordinary human limits.
Life extension: The effort to lengthen human lifespan, especially the period lived in good health. It is one of transhumanism’s most prominent goals and a focus of biomedical research.
Julian Huxley: An English evolutionary biologist and writer who coined the term “transhumanism” in 1957. His essay “Transhumanism” gave the movement its name and an early humanist vision.
Bioconservatism: A position skeptical of using biotechnology to alter human traits or capacities. It challenges transhumanism’s confidence that enhancement can be ethically directed.
Humanism: A family of outlooks emphasizing human agency, dignity, and flourishing. Transhumanism extends humanist commitments through deliberate technological transformation.
Cryonics: The preservation of legally dead bodies or brains at low temperatures in the hope of future revival. Some transhumanists regard it as a speculative bridge to future medicine.
Max More: A philosopher and futurist who helped define modern transhumanism and led the Extropy Institute. His principles and organizational work helped establish transhumanism as a contemporary movement.
Bioethics: The study of ethical questions arising in medicine, biology, and health care. Transhumanist proposals face scrutiny over consent, justice, safety, and human dignity.
Technological progress: The development and adoption of technologies that increase practical capabilities or change social life. Transhumanist arguments often frame technology as a means of directing human development.
Genetic engineering: The deliberate modification of an organism’s genetic material using biotechnology. It could alter inherited traits, making enhancement a question of intergenerational choice.
