Transit accessibility

Transit accessibility is the ease with which people can reach public transport, use its services, and reach destinations through it. It depends on service, location, travel time, cost, and the needs of different travelers.

Public transport network: A connected system of routes, stops, stations, and services that carries passengers. Its route layout determines which places transit can connect.
Cumulative-opportunities measure: An accessibility measure counting opportunities reachable within a specified travel-time or cost threshold. It turns the idea of reachable destinations into a clear threshold-based score.
Transport equity: The fair distribution of transport benefits, burdens, and decision-making power across groups and places. Differences in access can reveal who receives useful service and who is left out.
Mobility: The capacity or extent of movement by people or goods. Mobility measures movement, while accessibility emphasizes the opportunities movement makes reachable.
Transit frequency: The number of public transport vehicles serving a route during a specified time period. Shorter intervals reduce waiting and make more trips practical.
Gravity model: A model that estimates interaction between places using their attractiveness and the cost of travel between them. It weights reachable destinations by travel difficulty instead of treating all access as equal.
Spatial mismatch: A separation between where disadvantaged residents live and where suitable jobs are located. Weak transit access can intensify the distance between workers and employment.
Automobile accessibility: The ease of reaching destinations by private car, considering road networks, travel times, and parking. Comparing car and transit access exposes how transport investment favors different modes.
Walking access: The ability to reach destinations or services on foot from a starting point. Walking distance to stops often determines whether transit is reachable at all.
Space-time prism: The set of locations a person can reach within time constraints imposed by a schedule and travel speeds. It represents how service schedules and personal time budgets limit feasible trips.
