Translatio imperii

A medieval doctrine that imperial authority passed through history from one empire or ruler to another, legitimizing a successor polity. It framed political succession as the continuation of a single universal empire.

Roman Empire: The ancient state centered on Rome that governed the Mediterranean world and later divided into eastern and western halves. Its authority supplied the historical starting point for many later claims of imperial succession.
Donation of Constantine: A forged imperial document claiming that Constantine granted the pope authority over Rome and the western empire. It supplied a disputed account of how western Roman authority passed from emperor to pope.
Pope Leo III: The pope who crowned Charlemagne emperor in Rome on Christmas Day, 800. His coronation gave a pope a decisive role in the western transfer of imperial title.
