Translation movement

A sustained, organized effort to translate texts between languages. Translation movements circulate knowledge, literature, and ideas across linguistic and cultural boundaries.

Graeco-Arabic translation movement: A translation effort that rendered Greek scientific and philosophical works into Arabic, especially under the Abbasid caliphs. Its translators made major Greek works available to Arabic-speaking scholars.
Translation: The process of rendering meaning from one language into another. It is the central practice that turns a movement’s goals into translated texts.
Hellenistic scholarship: The scholarly traditions that developed in the Greek-speaking kingdoms formed after Alexander the Great’s conquests. Hellenistic scholarship supplied texts and methods later taken up by translators.

Library of Alexandria: A major ancient library and research institution in Ptolemaic Egypt that collected texts from across the Mediterranean world. Its collecting and scholarly work helped establish precedents for organized textual study.
Latin translations of the 12th century: A wave of Latin translations from Greek and Arabic that expanded access to philosophy and science in Western Europe. These translations helped change the Latin curriculum and scholarly repertoire.
Transcription: The representation of speech or text in written form, often using a specified notation system. Transcription records linguistic forms rather than rendering a text in another language.
