Transmission tower

A tall structure that supports overhead conductors carrying high-voltage electricity between substations and other parts of a power grid.

Overhead power line: An electrical transmission or distribution line whose conductors are suspended above ground. Transmission towers are the supporting structures in overhead lines.
Sag (electrical transmission): The vertical dip of an overhead conductor between its supports. Tower height and span length must accommodate conductor sag without losing ground clearance.
Suspension tower: A transmission tower that supports conductors along a relatively straight section of line. Its insulator strings suspend conductors without anchoring their full longitudinal tension.
Electric power outage: A loss of electrical service to part or all of an electrical system. Tower or line failures can interrupt power across multiple connected regions.
Insulator (electricity): A material or device that resists electric current and separates energized conductors from supporting structures. Insulators keep high-voltage conductors electrically isolated from the tower.
Conductor gallop: Large, low-frequency oscillation of overhead conductors, often driven by wind acting on ice-coated wires. Galloping conductors can collide or impose severe loads on tower arms.
Angle tower: A transmission tower designed to withstand conductor forces where a line changes direction. Its stronger structure resists the unbalanced pull created at route bends.
Lightning protection system: Equipment and design measures that reduce damage from lightning strikes. Tower-top shield wires and grounding help protect transmission circuits from lightning.
Electrical conductor: A material or object that allows electric charge to flow through it. Conductors span between towers and carry power across the grid.
Wind load: The force exerted by wind on a structure and its exposed components. Wind loads act on both the tower framework and the conductors it supports.
