Transnistria conflict

The Transnistria conflict is a dispute over the breakaway region of Transnistria in Moldova, rooted in the region’s 1990–1992 separation and unresolved political status.

Moldovan independence: Moldova’s emergence as an independent state from the Soviet Union in 1991. Independence sharpened disputes over Moldova’s political direction and Transnistria’s place within the new state.
War of Transnistria: The 1992 armed conflict between Moldovan forces and Transnistrian separatists, ending in a ceasefire. Its outcome established the military and political conditions that still shape the dispute.
