Transplanting

Transplanting is moving a young plant from one growing location to another so it can continue growing. It includes lifting or removing the plant, placing it in a new site or container, and helping it establish roots there.

Root ball: A mass of soil and roots held together when a plant is lifted for planting elsewhere. Keeping this mass intact protects fine roots during the move.
Seedling: A young plant that has developed from a germinated seed. Seedlings are commonly moved from trays into larger containers or garden beds.
Direct sowing: Planting seeds directly in the location where the plants are intended to grow. Direct sowing avoids moving seedlings from a separate growing site.
Root system: The network of roots that anchors a plant and absorbs water and mineral nutrients. Its condition strongly affects how well a moved plant can resume growth.
Tree transplanting: The relocation of a tree from one growing site to another. Trees require managing a large root system and canopy during relocation.
Transplant shock: Temporary stress after a plant is moved, often marked by wilting or slowed growth. Root disturbance and changed conditions can trigger this response.
Pricking out: Separating crowded seedlings and replanting them individually, usually into larger containers. This nursery technique gives young plants room to develop before final planting.
Seed propagation: Producing plants by germinating seeds. Transplanting often follows seed propagation, but is not itself a way to produce plants.
Root hair: A microscopic extension of a root epidermal cell that increases absorptive surface area. These delicate structures are easily damaged when roots are exposed or handled.
Seedling transplanting: Moving young plants grown from seed into a larger container or their final growing site. Seedlings are especially sensitive to root disturbance and environmental change.
