Transshipment

Transshipment is the transfer of cargo between vessels or transport modes during a journey. It lets shipments reach destinations not served directly by their origin transport.

Transshipment port: A port where cargo is transferred between vessels or between ships and other transport modes. It is the maritime hub where vessel-to-vessel transfers commonly occur.
Hub-and-spoke network: A network structure that routes flows through central hubs connected to multiple peripheral points. Shipping lines consolidate cargo at hubs before sending it onward to smaller ports.
Direct shipment: The carriage of cargo from origin to destination without an intermediate transfer between transport services. It avoids the intermediate handoff that defines transshipment.
Dwell time: The time cargo remains at a terminal or facility between arrival and departure. Long terminal stays can erase the schedule benefits of a hub transfer.
Container terminal: A port facility where containers are loaded, unloaded, stored, and transferred between transport modes. Its cranes and yards coordinate the physical handoff between ships, trucks, and trains.
Container shipping: The transport of standardized freight containers by ship, often as part of multimodal journeys. Container shipping is the principal setting for large-scale maritime transshipment.
Cross-docking: A logistics method that moves goods from inbound to outbound vehicles with little or no storage. It is a rapid transfer technique, usually within a distribution center rather than between long-distance vessel legs.
Supply chain resilience: The capacity of a supply chain to withstand disruptions and recover its operations. Hub dependence can create efficient routes but also concentrate disruption risk.
Intermodal freight transport: The movement of freight in the same loading unit across two or more transport modes. Transshipment is one operation within broader intermodal journeys.
Global supply chain: A network of organizations and activities that produces and delivers goods across countries. Transfers connect the separate transport legs that carry goods through global supply chains.
