Transverse wave

A wave in which oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of propagation. Its defining feature is the orientation of the disturbance, not the medium or energy involved.

Wave propagation: The transmission of a disturbance through space or a medium, carrying energy without requiring bulk transport of matter. A transverse wave is one geometry of this broader process.
Oscillation: Repeated variation of a quantity around an equilibrium state. The oscillating quantity is perpendicular to propagation in this wave type.
Wave on a string: A disturbance that travels along a stretched string while its points move sideways. It provides a direct mechanical example of perpendicular motion and travel.
Longitudinal wave: A wave in which oscillations are parallel to the direction of propagation. It differs from a transverse wave in the orientation of oscillations.
Wavelength: The distance between corresponding points on successive cycles of a wave. It measures the spatial period along the direction of propagation.
Displacement: A directed change in position from a chosen reference point. Particle or field displacement specifies the transverse disturbance.
Electromagnetic radiation: Energy propagated through space by oscillating electric and magnetic fields. Light and radio signals are transverse electromagnetic waves.
Sound wave: A mechanical pressure disturbance that propagates through a medium as compressions and rarefactions. Ordinary sound in fluids is longitudinal, unlike a transverse wave.
Frequency: The number of repeating cycles of a periodic event per unit time. It sets how rapidly a transverse wave oscillates at a fixed point.
Propagation direction: The direction in which a wave pattern or its energy advances. Transversality is defined relative to this direction.
