Travertine

Travertine is freshwater limestone deposited when calcium carbonate precipitates from mineral-rich water. Its pores and layered textures often preserve traces of the water flow and organisms present during deposition.

Calcium carbonate: A chemical compound, CaCO₃, found in minerals such as calcite and aragonite. Travertine forms when dissolved calcium carbonate precipitates from water.
Limestone: A sedimentary rock composed mainly of calcium carbonate minerals. Travertine is a freshwater variety of limestone.
Travertine terraces: Step-like landforms built by successive carbonate deposits around flowing springs. Terraces are a prominent landscape form created by travertine deposition.
Colosseum: An ancient Roman amphitheatre in Rome, completed in the first century CE. Its exterior structure used travertine quarried near Rome.
Carbon dioxide: A colorless gas that dissolves in water and participates in the carbonate system. CO₂ loss from spring water can trigger calcium carbonate precipitation.
Tufa: A porous freshwater limestone formed near ambient temperatures, often through biological activity. Tufa is closely related to travertine but commonly forms in cooler, biologically active settings.
Pamukkale: A Turkish site of white travertine terraces fed by mineral-rich thermal springs. Its terraces show how flowing spring water builds extensive travertine landforms.
Tivoli: An Italian town east of Rome known for historic travertine quarries and waterfalls. Tivoli’s deposits supplied much of the stone used in ancient Roman construction.
Degassing: The release of dissolved gases from a liquid into the surrounding atmosphere. Rapid CO₂ escape helps explain carbonate deposition at waterfalls and spring outlets.
Speleothem: A mineral deposit formed in a cave, including stalactites and stalagmites. Speleothems also precipitate carbonate from water, but form inside caves rather than at springs or rivers.
