Treaty of Ancón

The 1883 peace treaty between Chile and Peru ended Peru’s participation in the War of the Pacific and ceded Tarapacá to Chile.

Tarapacá: A Pacific coastal region in present-day northern Chile, ceded by Peru to Chile under the Treaty of Ancón. The treaty transferred this province outright to Chile.
Battle of Huamachuco: A July 1883 battle in which Chilean forces defeated Peruvian resistance in the War of the Pacific. The defeat weakened resistance shortly before Peru signed the treaty.
Chilean annexation of Tarapacá: Chile’s incorporation of Tarapacá after Peru ceded the province in the Treaty of Ancón. The treaty’s clearest immediate territorial consequence was Chilean control of Tarapacá.
José Antonio de Lavalle: A Peruvian diplomat who led an early mediation mission during the War of the Pacific. His failed mediation preceded the military circumstances that produced the treaty.
Tacna–Arica dispute: A territorial dispute between Chile and Peru over Tacna and Arica, left unresolved by the Treaty of Ancón. The treaty placed these provinces under Chilean rule pending a plebiscite that never occurred as planned.
Miguel Iglesias: A Peruvian military and political leader who negotiated peace with Chile and became president in 1883. He led the Peruvian government that accepted the treaty.

Antero Aspíllaga: A Peruvian diplomat who signed the Treaty of Ancón for Miguel Iglesias’s government. He represented Peru in the treaty’s formal negotiations and signing.
