Treaty of Arras (1482)

The 1482 agreement between France and the Habsburgs that partitioned parts of the Burgundian inheritance after the death of Charles the Bold.

Mary of Burgundy: The duchess of Burgundy who inherited Charles the Bold’s lands and married Maximilian of Austria. Her inheritance and marriage shaped the rival claims settled at Arras.
Charles the Bold: The last Valois duke of Burgundy, killed at the Battle of Nancy in 1477. His death without a male heir triggered the succession crisis resolved at Arras.
County of Burgundy: A territory in the western Holy Roman Empire, also known as Franche-Comté, distinct from the French duchy of Burgundy. The treaty assigned this Habsburg-held territory to France as part of Margaret’s dowry.
Treaty of Picquigny: The 1475 agreement in which Edward IV of England ended his invasion of France in return for payments and a truce. Unlike Arras’s dynastic partition, Picquigny ended a military campaign through payments and a truce.
Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor: The Habsburg ruler who married Mary of Burgundy and became guardian of their son Philip. He negotiated for the Habsburg interest and accepted the treaty’s settlement.
Battle of Nancy: The 1477 battle in which Charles the Bold was defeated and killed by forces of the Swiss Confederacy and René II of Lorraine. Charles’s death there opened the struggle over his lands.
Artois: A historical county in the Low Countries, centered on Arras and later incorporated into France. France received Artois under the treaty’s territorial provisions.
Treaty of Senlis: The 1493 agreement between France and Maximilian I that revised the territorial settlement of Arras. Senlis restored key territories to the Habsburg side after Arras’s French gains.
Margaret of Austria: The daughter of Mary of Burgundy and Maximilian I, betrothed to the French dauphin under the treaty. Her proposed marriage to Charles VIII was the agreement’s central dynastic guarantee.
Burgundian succession crisis: The conflict over Charles the Bold’s territories after his death in 1477, involving France and the Habsburgs. It created the competing claims that the treaty sought to settle.
