Treaty of Devol

The Treaty of Devol was a 1108 agreement between Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos and Bohemond I of Antioch. It set terms for Antioch’s submission to Byzantine authority and Bohemond’s recognition as a Byzantine vassal.

Byzantine suzerainty: A political relationship in which a ruler acknowledges Byzantine superiority while retaining authority over a territory. The treaty framed Antioch’s ruler as a vassal owing obligations to the Byzantine emperor.
Siege of Dyrrhachium: The 1107–1108 siege in which Bohemond’s forces failed to capture the Byzantine port of Dyrrhachium. Its failure left Bohemond in a weak position to negotiate with Alexios.
Byzantine Empire: The medieval empire centered on Constantinople, which continued the Roman imperial state in the eastern Mediterranean. The treaty expressed the empire’s effort to reassert authority in northern Syria.
Treaty of Zaragoza: A 1529 agreement between Spain and Portugal that divided claims to territories in the Moluccas. It settled competing claims through territorial division rather than vassalage.
Bohemond I of Antioch: A Norman prince who became prince of Antioch and led its forces during the First Crusade. He negotiated the agreement and accepted its stated obligations.

Vassal: A person who holds status or land under a superior lord and owes specified duties. Bohemond’s promised position depended on the medieval institution of vassalage.
Principality of Antioch: A Crusader state established in northern Syria after the First Crusade. The treaty specified the principality’s proposed relationship to Byzantium.
Pact of Devol: Another name for the Treaty of Devol, derived from the place where the agreement was concluded. This alternate name appears in accounts of the same 1108 settlement.
