Treaty of Ganghwa

The 1876 treaty between Japan and Korea opened Korean ports to Japanese trade and declared Korea independent in its relations with Japan, challenging Qing China’s traditional influence.

Japanese colonization of Korea: Japan's formal rule over Korea from 1910 to 1945. The treaty began a sequence of growing Japanese control that culminated in annexation.
