Treaty of Greenville

The 1795 agreement between the United States and a confederation of Indigenous nations that ended the Northwest Indian War and ceded much of present-day Ohio.

Northwest Indian War: A conflict from 1785 to 1795 between the United States and Indigenous nations over control of the Old Northwest. The treaty formally ended this war after years of contested U.S. expansion.
Greenville Treaty Line: A boundary established by the Treaty of Greenville separating U.S.-claimed lands from Indigenous-held lands in the Old Northwest. The line defined the treaty’s central territorial division.
Ohio: A U.S. state in the Great Lakes region, admitted to the Union in 1803. The treaty opened much of the land that became Ohio to U.S. settlement.
