Treaty of Hubertusburg
The 1763 peace treaty between Prussia, Austria, and Saxony that ended their continental war without major territorial changes.
Silesian Wars: Three wars fought by Prussia and Austria between 1740 and 1763 over control of Silesia. The treaty closed the final conflict in this series and confirmed Prussian control of Silesia.
Third Silesian War: The 1756–1763 phase of the Silesian Wars, fought chiefly between Prussia and Austria during the Seven Years' War. This was the conflict the treaty formally brought to an end.
Peace of Paris (1763): The 1763 treaty between Britain, France, and Spain that settled major colonial and maritime conflicts of the Seven Years' War. It ended the war’s overseas contests, unlike Hubertusburg’s settlement of the continental conflict.
Hubertusburg Palace: A Baroque hunting lodge in Saxony where Prussia, Austria, and Saxony concluded their 1763 peace treaty. The palace gave the treaty its name and hosted the negotiations.
Kingdom of Prussia: A European kingdom that became a major military power under the Hohenzollern dynasty. Prussia emerged from the treaty with Silesia and its status as a great power strengthened.
Frederick the Great: King of Prussia from 1740 to 1786, known for military campaigns and state reforms. He negotiated peace after leading Prussia through a war that threatened its survival.
Treaty of Breslau: The 1742 peace agreement in which Austria ceded most of Silesia to Prussia. Its territorial settlement underlay the dispute that Hubertusburg left unresolved in Austria’s favor.
Treaty of Hubertusburg negotiations: The diplomatic talks that produced the February 1763 peace agreement among Prussia, Austria, and Saxony. The negotiations converted military stalemate into a settlement without substantial territorial revision.
Silesia: A historic region of Central Europe, now divided mainly between Poland, Czechia, and Germany. Prussia retained this contested region, the principal territorial prize of the wars.
Maria Theresa: Ruler of the Habsburg monarchy from 1740 to 1780 and queen of Hungary and Bohemia. She accepted the peace despite her continuing ambition to recover Silesia.
