Treaty of Kiel

The 1814 peace settlement that ended Denmark’s participation in the Napoleonic Wars and transferred Norway to Sweden, prompting Norwegian resistance and a brief independence effort.

Norwegian Constituent Assembly: The assembly that drafted Norway’s constitution at Eidsvoll in 1814 and declared independence. It rejected the settlement’s transfer of Norway and established a Norwegian political alternative.
Napoleonic Wars: A series of European wars from 1803 to 1815 involving Napoleonic France and shifting coalitions of states. Their final campaigns determined Denmark’s defeat and Norway’s fate.
Treaty of Kiel text: The signed 1814 instrument setting out peace terms between Denmark and Sweden, including the transfer of Norway. Its clauses specify the legal basis and conditions of the transfer.
Frederick VI of Denmark: King of Denmark and Norway from 1808 to 1814, and king of Denmark until 1839. He signed away Norway after Denmark’s defeat alongside Napoleonic France.

Battle of Leipzig: The decisive 1813 coalition victory over Napoleon at Leipzig, forcing French forces to retreat from Germany. Denmark’s position weakened after its ally France lost the battle.
