Treaty of Paris (1898)

The 1898 peace treaty between Spain and the United States ended the Spanish–American War and transferred Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines to the United States.

Philippine–American War: A war between the United States and Filipino forces that began in 1899 amid resistance to U.S. rule. Filipino resistance followed the treaty’s transfer of the Philippines to the United States.
Cession: The formal transfer of territory or rights from one sovereign state to another. The treaty used cession to transfer Spain’s claims over several territories.
Spanish–American War: An 1898 war in which the United States defeated Spain and acquired overseas territories. The treaty formally concluded this conflict.
William R. Day: A U.S. diplomat and jurist who led the American peace commission negotiating the 1898 treaty. He headed the delegation that negotiated the agreement in Paris.
Teller Amendment: An 1898 U.S. congressional amendment disavowing any intention to exercise sovereignty over Cuba after the war. It contrasts with the treaty’s territorial cessions: Cuba was not transferred to the United States.
Insular Cases: A series of U.S. Supreme Court decisions addressing the constitutional status of territories acquired after the Spanish–American War. The acquisitions raised the constitutional questions these decisions addressed.

Eugenio Montero Ríos: A Spanish statesman who led Spain’s delegation during negotiations for the 1898 peace treaty. He represented Spain in the negotiations with Day’s commission.
Paris Peace Conference (1898): The negotiations in Paris that produced the treaty ending the Spanish–American War. It is the diplomatic process behind the treaty’s final text.
