Treaty of Passarowitz

The 1718 peace treaty between the Habsburg monarchy and the Ottoman Empire ended their war and confirmed major territorial changes in southeastern Europe.

Banat of Temeswar: A Habsburg-administered province created after the Ottoman defeat in the Great Turkish War. The treaty confirmed Habsburg control of this former Ottoman territory.
Austro-Turkish War (1716–1718): A war in which the Habsburg monarchy defeated the Ottoman Empire between 1716 and 1718. Passarowitz formally ended this conflict.
Passarowitz: A town in present-day Serbia, historically known by the name used for the 1718 peace congress. The treaty takes its name from the place where negotiations were held.
Morea: A historical name for the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece. The Ottoman Empire retained the Morea, which it had recaptured from Venice during the war.
Kingdom of Serbia (1718–1739): A Habsburg crown land formed from Serbian territories acquired from the Ottoman Empire in 1718. The treaty placed northern Serbia, including Belgrade, under Habsburg rule.
Battle of Petrovaradin: A 1716 battle in which Habsburg forces under Prince Eugene defeated an Ottoman army. The victory opened the way for Habsburg advances into Ottoman-held territory.
Ottoman capitulations: Privileges granted by Ottoman rulers to foreign states and their merchants, often through treaties. Commercial provisions at Passarowitz continued the use of such diplomatic privileges.
Oltenia: A historical region of southwestern Romania, between the Danube and the Carpathian Mountains. The treaty transferred Oltenia from Ottoman to Habsburg control.
Belgrade: A city at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers, historically contested by regional powers. Its transfer to the Habsburgs was one of the settlement’s most consequential changes.
Siege of Belgrade (1717): A Habsburg siege that captured Belgrade from the Ottoman Empire in 1717. Belgrade’s capture strengthened the Habsburg position before negotiations.
