Treaty of Vereeniging

The 1902 peace agreement that ended the Second Boer War, bringing the South African Republic and Orange Free State under British sovereignty while promising eventual self-government.

Second Boer War: A conflict fought from 1899 to 1902 between the British Empire and Boer republics in southern Africa. The treaty ended this war after Britain defeated the Boer forces.
British sovereignty: Supreme political authority exercised by the British Crown over a territory. The treaty established British sovereignty over both Boer republics.
Louis Botha: A Boer military commander who became prime minister of the Transvaal and later the Union of South Africa. He represented the Transvaal in the peace negotiations and signed the treaty.
