Trematoda

Trematoda is a class of parasitic flatworms, commonly called flukes. Most species have complex life cycles involving mollusks and other hosts.

Trematode life cycle: The sequence of developmental stages through which a trematode passes, often in multiple hosts. Host changes and larval transformations define how trematodes reproduce and spread.
Platyhelminthes: A phylum of bilaterally symmetrical, soft-bodied invertebrates that includes flatworms. Trematodes are one parasitic lineage within this broader flatworm phylum.
Schistosomiasis: A disease caused by blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma. It is a major human disease caused by trematodes transmitted through freshwater exposure.
Fasciola hepatica: A large liver fluke that infects sheep, cattle, and other mammals, including humans. Its snail-to-plant transmission route exemplifies a complex trematode life cycle.
Miracidium: A ciliated larval stage that hatches from a trematode egg and usually seeks a molluscan host. This free-swimming larva commonly begins the fluke’s passage into its first host.
Endoparasite: A parasite that lives inside the body of its host. Most trematodes occupy internal organs or tissues during at least one life stage.
Fascioliasis: A parasitic disease caused by liver flukes of the genus Fasciola. This infection affects people and livestock after ingestion of contaminated aquatic plants or water.
Clonorchis sinensis: An East Asian liver fluke transmitted to humans through raw or undercooked freshwater fish. Its fish-borne route contrasts with flukes acquired from aquatic plants or water.
Cercaria: A motile larval stage that leaves a molluscan host and seeks another host or encysts. Its departure from the snail enables transmission to the next host.
Hermaphroditism: A reproductive condition in which an individual possesses both male and female reproductive organs. Most flukes can produce both types of gametes, though blood flukes are an exception.
