Tribune of the plebs

An elected magistrate of the Roman Republic who protected plebeians and could veto actions by other magistrates. Tribunes were sacrosanct, making attacks on them religiously forbidden.

Intercessio: A Roman magistrate’s formal intervention to prevent or invalidate another magistrate’s act. Tribunes used this veto power to stop decisions they judged harmful to plebeians.
Conflict of the Orders: A prolonged political struggle between Rome’s patrician and plebeian orders during the early and middle Republic. The tribunate arose as a central institution in plebeian efforts to secure political protection.

Concilium Plebis: An assembly of Roman plebeians that elected tribunes and passed resolutions binding plebeians. This plebeian assembly elected tribunes and provided their political base.
Lex Hortensia: A Roman law of 287 BCE that made plebiscites binding on the entire Roman population. It strengthened the legislative authority of the assembly that tribunes convened.
