Tribute

Tribute is a payment or delivery of goods made by a subordinate polity to a more powerful ruler, often under threat or as acknowledgment of authority.

Suzerainty: Suzerainty is a relationship in which a dominant state controls a subordinate polity’s external affairs while it retains limited self-government. Tribute often marked the subordinate polity’s recognition of the superior ruler’s authority.
Aztec Empire: The Aztec Empire was a Mesoamerican alliance led by the Mexica that dominated central Mexico before the Spanish conquest. Its provinces owed scheduled deliveries of textiles, food, and other goods recorded in tribute documents.
Tax: A tax is a compulsory contribution imposed by a government on people, property, or economic activity under its jurisdiction. Tribute crosses a political hierarchy between polities, unlike ordinary domestic taxation.
Imperialism: Imperialism is the extension of a state’s power over other territories or peoples through political, economic, or military means. Tribute was one way empires exercised power without directly administering every subordinate community.
Sinosphere: The Sinosphere is the historical zone of cultural and political influence shaped by China across East Asia. Chinese courts developed influential diplomatic practices in which tribute missions expressed hierarchical relations.
Vassalage: Vassalage is a political relationship in which a subordinate receives protection or land in exchange for service and loyalty. Tribute could be one obligation owed within a broader hierarchy of dependence.
Inca Empire: The Inca Empire was a vast Andean state centered in Cusco that expanded across western South America in the fifteenth century. Its rulers mobilized provincial labor and goods through systems that included reciprocal state redistribution.
Diplomatic gift: A diplomatic gift is an exchange offered between political representatives to establish or maintain relations. A gift may resemble tribute materially, but its presentation need not imply subordination.
State formation: State formation is the historical process through which political institutions centralize authority and organize territory and populations. Collecting tribute could strengthen rulers’ administrative reach and resources.
Tribute system (East Asia): The East Asian tribute system was a changing set of diplomatic practices linking Chinese courts with neighboring polities. It is a prominent historical framework for understanding tribute as both exchange and political order.
