Trick-taking game

A card game played in rounds called tricks, with players contributing one card per round. Players usually follow the suit led, and the highest-ranking eligible card wins the trick.

Trick (card games): A round in a card game in which each player contributes one card and one card wins. The trick is the basic round whose winner determines how play proceeds.
Playing card: A card from a standardized or locally defined deck used in games and other activities. Trick-taking games use cards grouped into suits and ordered by rank.
Contract bridge: A partnership trick-taking game in which bidding sets a contract for the number of tricks to win. Bridge makes bidding, partnership play, and contract scoring especially explicit.
Shedding-type card game: A card game in which players aim to get rid of their cards, often by matching or beating a play. Shedding games organize play around emptying hands rather than winning tricks.
Follow suit: The rule requiring a player to play a card of the suit led when able. Following suit determines which cards remain eligible to win a trick.
Suit (cards): One of the categories into which cards in a deck are divided, such as hearts or clubs. Suit membership governs following suit and often determines trump.
Whist: A classic English partnership card game in which players try to win tricks, often with a trump suit. Whist is a foundational plain-trick game and a historical ancestor of bridge.
Matching card game: A card game in which players form or extend sets of matching cards according to shared features or ranks. Matching games reward combinations rather than the highest eligible card in a trick.
Trump (card games): A suit or card ranking above the ordinary suits in a game. A trump card can win a trick even when a higher-ranked card of another suit was played.
Playing card rank: The ordered value assigned to a playing card within its suit or game. Rank helps determine which eligible card wins a trick.
