Triglidae

Triglidae is a family of marine ray-finned fishes commonly called gurnards or sea robins. Its members are distinguished by enlarged pectoral fins and free sensory rays beneath the head.

Teleost: A diverse group of ray-finned fishes whose skeletons are largely ossified and whose tails are generally flexible. Gurnards belong to this major branch of modern ray-finned fishes.

Bottom trawling: A fishing method that drags a net along the seafloor to catch demersal animals. Bottom trawls commonly capture gurnards living near or on the seabed.
Peristediidae: A family of armored sea robins with bony plates and elongated snouts. Armored sea robins resemble gurnards but belong to a separate fish family.
Barbel (anatomy): A slender sensory appendage near an animal's mouth, often bearing taste buds or other sensory receptors. The free rays beneath a gurnard's head function as sensory appendages on the seafloor.
Chemoreception: The detection of chemical substances by sensory receptors, including taste and smell. Sensory receptors on free rays help gurnards locate food by touch and chemical cues.
